Time: 9am
Where: in Santa Ana at the Elks Lodge
Lunch with vegan/vegetarian options!
Please contact us in advance for reservations as there will be NO PAYMENT AT THE DOOR.
Presentation:
The Orange County Colony of the California Mayflower Society is honored to
welcome Cape Cod artist Karen Rinaldo and author Kevin Doyle to our colony.
Their presentation will discuss Karen’s painting, The First Thanksgiving - 1621
and the book she and Kevin co-authored, In the Wake of the Mayflower.
Ms. Rinaldo is a well-known visual historian. In 1994, the NACC, The National
Association of Congregational Christian Churches, “The Pilgrims Church,”
commissioned her to create the first historically accurate painting of the first
Thanksgiving. The painting is presently on exhibit at Pilgrim Hall Museum. The
information in Karen’s painting was judged “historically accurate” by the
Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and Mayflower scholars.
The painting inspired the book In the Wake of the Mayflower by co-authors Karen
Rinaldo and Kevin Doyle. The book tells the story of the Pilgrim adventure in an
easy-reading vignette that provides in-depth research about unique people, places
and events. Written in 2020 for the 400-year commemoration of the Mayflower’s
arrival, the book focuses on the early events of the Pilgrim’s journey and their
usually beneficial relationship with the native Wampanoag tribe that lasted for 50
years before differing interests culminated in King Philip’s War. The vignettes in
the book have been deemed “well researched” and “an easy read.” Wampanoag
Chief Flying Eagle was pleased that “finally someone is looking at the period of
history with a positive eye.”
