Scholarship Competition Information
2022 Scholarship Information:
The Executive Board of the Orange County Colony of the California Society of Mayflower Descendants proudly announces the 2021/2022 scholarship program for students attending college, undergraduate or graduate level students or graduating high school seniors, who are either a member or have a direct lineage connection or share bloodline (i.e., niece, nephew, grandniece, grandnephew, cousin) to a member of the Orange County Colony Mayflower Descendants. The applicant or his/her family member must be an OC Colony member in good standing for at least one year as of the date of the application. There will be no restrictions on age (if meets eligibility requirements) prior winner status, or residence of the member or applicant.
Scholarships will be awarded as follows: $1,500 First Place, $1,000 Second Place, $500 Third Place.
The applicant package must be complete and contain each of the following items:

• A letter of recommendation from the parent or grandparent whose direct lineage qualifies the student for competition.

Applications are accepted with an accompanying essay on a particular topic chosen each year by the OC Colony Board. This topic is changed annually and announced no later than February 1st of each year.
The topic for the 2021/2022 essay is:
"What was the Environmental Setting of Plymouth, MA during the 1620s and how did it aid or hinder the survival of the early Colony Settlers. Basically, how did the newcomers adapt to a foreign land with new challenges? Although they formed a cohesive and cooperative society from the start, they also obviously had to acquire the basic necessities for life and adapt to the seasonally harsh climate in Plymouth."
The essay must be 750 words or less.
Essays will be evaluated for content. organization, style, references and grammar. All entries must be typewritten, and sources cited in appropriate bibliographic style. The essayist is encouraged to cite one of the two references from the following sources listed below:

The application packet due date is March 1, 2022.
The application materials may be scanned and sent via email to teachrsuz@aol.com or mailed via U.S. Postal Service.
Mail no later than March 1, 2022 to: Susan Knowles, 5711 Richmond Ave., Garden Grove, CA, 92845.
Students will be notified and money distributed in April 2022. The winners will be recognized at the Annual Membership Meeting on April 2022, as well as the Mayflower Compact Day, November, 2022 (if winners aren't available to attend in April). Attendance is not mandatory to receive the scholarship.

The California State Society of Mayflower Descendants 2022
Scholarship Competition Information:
The California Mayflower Society awards three scholarships each year to qualified applicants: one $5000 scholarship, one $3,000 scholarship, and one $2,000 scholarship. This is a statewide competition, open to any qualified student applicant from any colony within the State of California.
The due date for the 2022 applications to be submitted is March 1, 2022.

There are 4 Scholarships offered by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants each year. Scholarships will be awarded as follows:
$6,000 First Place, $5,000 Second Place and $4,000 Third Place as well as a $3,000 Mary Chilton Winslow Scholarship to a graduating high school senior who is a Mayflower descendant and will be attending a four-year college or university or two-year community college.
This is a national competition open to any qualified student applicant from any state or colony.
The due date for the 2022 applications to be submitted is March 1, 2022.
If any documentation needs to be submitted to GSMD to obtain a current GSMD membership number, applicants should begin work as early as possible with the Mayflower Historian in their state of residence to complete this process.
You will be required to list your Mayflower Ancestor(s) from the ship.
